Whole and Half Cows
Whole Cow -- $4.22/lb* Half Cow -- $4.42/lb* *based on the hanging weight (see below)
How much does it cost? A whole cow is $4.22 per pound; a half cow is $4.42 per pound based on the hanging weight. That price includes the meat, the slaughter fee, the processing, and the vacuum processing/labeling, or in other words: everything.
What is the hanging weight? The hanging weight is what the dressed out carcass weighs prior to butchering. The head, hide, organs, hooves, and tail are not included in the hanging weight.
What is a typical hanging weight? Our cows usually have a hanging weight of around 550-600 pounds for a whole or 275-300 pounds for a half.
So the total cost is... The total cost depends on the actual weight of the animal, but it usually works out to about $2,400 for a whole cow and $1,250 for a half.
How much actual meat will I get? The hanging weight is usually about 65% of the live weight; the actual butchered weight is around 55% of the live weight. So, a 1,000 pound cow would have a hanging weight of about 600 pounds and yield about 500 pounds of butchered meat for a whole cow. A half would, of course, be about 250 pounds of butchered meat.
How is the meat cut? With a whole or half cow you get custom butchering meaning that you get your meat cut however you want it. You decide how thick the steaks will be, how big the roasts will be, whether you get more filet or more T-bone, you can even choose options like meat for kabobs, fajitas, or stews -- it's all up to you.
Here is what one recent customer got from a half cow. The hanging weight of his side was 381#.
8.54 lbs. sirloin tip roast 9.62 lbs. ribeye steaks 9.90 lbs. shoulder roast 6.54 lbs. brisket 2.46 lbs. oxtail 2.39 lbs. flatiron steaks 3.71 lbs. filet steaks 1.27 lbs. flank steak 9.49 lbs. soup bones 1.17 lbs. skirt steak 15.35 lbs. chuck roast 9.94 lbs. rump roast 7.81 lbs. strip steak 7.52 lbs. sirloin steak 12.53 lbs. cube steak 150 lbs. ground beef
All added up that made about 258 pounds of beef.
What do I do now? Just give us a call or send us an email to get things started. We'll ask you to make a $200 deposit to reserve your whole or half cow which will be deducted from the final price. After we find out the hanging weight of your cow or side, we will contact you with the exact cost. Payment can be made by credit card over the phone or in person here at the farm. We'll then give you the phone number of our processor. He is very friendly and experienced. He will walk you through each step, explaining your choices for each cut of beef. We will also let you know when your beef will be available for you to pick up either at the farm or at the processor, whichever is easier for you. Your beef will be vacuum sealed, clearly labeled, and packaged in cardboard boxes, each weighing about 25 or 30 pounds.
